Raimund Abrahams letzte Vorlesung | SCI-Arc [Klick aufs Bild]

Am 4. März kurz nach Mitternacht starb der Architekt und Theoretiker Raimund Abraham in  Downtown Los Angeles bei einem Autounfall. Abraham hatte nur wenige Stunden zuvor noch einen Vortrag am Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) gehalten. Dessen Direktor Eric Owen Moss beschrieb ihn in einer ersten Reaktion als „unersetzbare Kraft in der Architektur“.

Der Osttiroler, 1933 in Lienz geboren, hatte von 1952 bis 1958 an der TU in Graz studiert. Zwischen 1960 und 1964 arbeitete er als freischaffender Architekt in Wien, danach war er Professor an der Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. 1971 übersiedelte er nach New York, wo er als Adjunct Professor am Pratt Institute und als Gastdozent an der Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art tätig war.

Realisiert hatte Abraham bis 1992 nicht viel, nur ein paar Häuser. Bei den wirklich großen Wettbewerben (z.B. Centre Pompidou oder Bastille-Oper in Paris) war er immer nur Zweiter geworden. Damit hatte der gedrungene Mann mit dem mächtigen Schnurrbart und dem weißen Hut aber kein Problem: Abraham verstand sich eher als Theoretiker und beschäftigte sich vor allem mit „imaginärer Architektur“ . Diese sei, sagte er, viel besser als gebaute, wenn sie schlecht ist. Der Titel seiner Monografie, 1996 erschienen, hieß daher treffend [UN]BUILT.

Die Pläne für das in „austrian cultural forum“ umgetaufte Österreichische Institut in New York hingegen versprachen eine exemplarische Architektur: Seit dem Seagram Building des Mies van der Rohe habe es kein vergleichbares Werk mehr in der Stadt gegeben, lobten die Kritiker. Ein „Minihochhaus“, 20 Stockwerke hoch bei einer Gebäudebreite von nur 7,6 Metern.

Abrahams Einfluss lässt sich nicht nur in seinen umgesetzten Werken erkennen, sondern vor allem auch in dem Geist, mit dem er zahlreiche nationale und internationale Architekten beeinflusste.

ON ARCHITECTURE by Raimund Abraham

A drawing for me is a „model“ that oscillates between the idea and the physical or built reality of architecture. It is not a step towards this reality and in this respect it is autonomous. However, for me there must be the anticipation of the physical reality and its commemoration of the idea. In this sense, an architectural drawing can never be rendered. On the contrary, it has to be constructed so that it reveals the idea of the syntactic form through the medium of lines. In much the same way it has to anticipate the sensuality of the material through the layering of colour.

More specifically, architecture can only be understood as a polarity between geometric and physiological space or as a collision between the ideal and matter, and while the ideal represents the notion of infinity or, let us say, the eternal, matter can be regarded as the symbolic representation of the body – its presence and its absence. To put it in other words, while man’s conceptual powers aspire to the infinite, his body is essentially fragile, temporal, a corpus which will be laid waste, like material itself, by the unremitting action of time. If there remains any hope for recreating the iconic in the modern world, then surely this will only come from reinterpretation of the archetypal existence of man; that is to say, new icons cannot possibly be established on the basis of motifs drawn or transposed from the lost historical epochs. New icons will either come from recognition of our intrisic ontological limits or they will not arise at all.
